You make a great point that hadn't occurred to me: The movie looks too clean and sanitized. Yes, it's beautifully shot, but Eggers should have gone for a "dirtier" look. And your comment about the movie lacking liveliness and passion is spot on. And this: "saps the film dry of any feeling or intrigue." Yep.
By the way, on matters of punctuation, check out my Medium article called "Kamala Harris and the Apostrophe S." My point, citing your piece, is that "Eggers' version" ought to be "Eggers's version," and so on for all the instances of the possessive case. I just never understood the argument behind dropped the s. Sorry for being a noodge, but that's me.
